When to pull the pull ups?

NEWS BULLETIN::: I move into my house tomorrow!!! Sanity will return!

OK, so question? When do you let a 'potty training' kid go out in public in under-roos? 'Cause ya'll, I'm scared sh#$less. Seriously, one small mistake and there's piss all over someone's floor. Last night, we actually forgot he went out to Sam's Club in underwear. About 45 min. into our trip he screams that he's gotta go potty. We were on the freakin, frackin other side of the store. I have never run so fast in my life. And you know what, he played for a min before going. The kid was just fine. I, however was a basketcase.

But then the kid has this little extra problem. He sits when he pees, and then he ends to make it go on is clothes that are around his ankles. It's a talent. I try to tell him to push his "little thingy" down, but somehow that's not working out for him. So there's the whole, 'yeah, we made it to the can, but we peed on ourself anyway' issue too.

So I need some confidence. The kid has been doing great, (except when he's in at home...or with his dad) then he goes into the bathroom and has an accident for some reason. But in the past 2 weeks he's gone in his pull up only twice. So help me out here, should I go "all in?"

After a week of no pull-up accidents while out and about with really long trips, we tried undies. And planned very short outings for a while.
Oh, and about the peeing on the clothes... I find that their short little legs can't open wide enough to let their short little willies hang down far enough, so at home we strip him from the waist down. In public, we take off one shoe and remove the pants and undies from that leg... I tuck the loose leg up in the top of the pants so they don't drag on the floor, and I put the shoe back on the empty leg so that he doesn't step on the gross floor without a shoe!

One of the best potty training tips I can offer is to take the toddler potty with you everywhere! I bought a second one specifically for the car. I have two kids, and only 3 seats in the back of my SUV. So I temporarily put the two carseats next to eachother leaving plenty of room on the backseat for the potty. I use an old bath towel under the potty (just in case). I believe in cold turkey with the underwear! NO Pull-Ups unless it is night time. So before we go into a store, and as soon as we come out I make my daughter (or son) sit on the potty in the car. If they pee in the potty I empty the potty cup into the bushes. If they go #2 I use planty of baby wipes to clean it out and dispose of the wipes into a diaper. Once clean-up of the potty is done I wrap the diaper up tight and toss it in a trashcan. This method has worked GREAT with both of my kids. The potty we bought plays a song when they pee and both kids LOVED to make the song play. It also has a smaller removeable cup for emptying and this makes it SO easy. A lot of potty's I have seen are big and bulky and hard to empty/clean. For the first few weeks, while venturing out in underwear I always carried an extra pair in my purse, along with a travel pack of wipes, and an extra pair of pants. That way I have everything I need right there, just in case! As far as "squirting himself" we told my son over and over as he was PTing, "Point your wiener!" He caught on quickly and automatically does it now (; Hope something I have said will help, LOL! Good luck!

If we were going on a long trip--something that required a 3 hour or more drive--my toddler would be in a pull-up. If we were just running errands around town, underwear. And then I would always bring them to the bathroom and ask if they had to potty. It's one of those things where you kind of have to use your judgement on his progress at home. If you're in a store and and it's been like 20-30 minutes since he's last gone, bring him to the bathroom. Eventually you're going to have to go without the pull up. Kind of like ripping off the bandaid. Also, with my son (3yo), when he goes to a public restroom, I always hold him up facing the toilet.

Now if only I could get my son out of pull-ups during bedtime.....

I don't remember at what point we felt comfortable in unders out of the house. He wore them most of the time anyway, so at some point it just had to be done. I always kept a change of clothes in the car, but I'm not sure we ever needed them.

My son would only sit for the longest time too. I just kept prodding him to stand and pee. Eventually he realized that was faster and easier and did it all the time. And when he was sitting for quite a while we had to "help" him to make sure that he pushed it down to go. No it's not an issue.

Hang in there. He'll get it. Just a matter of time.

I don't know about you, but I personally have yet to have survived the words, "I need to go potty," without panicking. We're way past the point of having accidents, but those words scare me nonetheless. Every. single. time.

I was so scared to have my son wear his underwear out rather than a pullup. I don't know how many times we have had to run to make a mad dash to get to the bathroom in time. Just start out with short trips and ask if he has to go potty often.

When my son needs to sit I have him push his thingy down and close his legs together that way he doesn't misfire.

Good Luck!

LOL you have to push it down for him!!! Thats what I do with my three year old. If not he pushes it down just far enough to go out underneath the toilet seat and all over his clothes and floor. ALL of my boys sit to pee, if not, they're like freaking fire hoses....all over my bathroom!

I dont remember my children ever wearing pull-ups again once potty trained until recently when my youngest starting using his bed as a potty. now we are back to night time pull ups I dont know when I will ever let those go away as I am nervous his brand new mattress will become his new nighttime toilet yet again. I blame it on the move and wonder if it will be like this forever.

I don't know as much about potty training boys but I do know about peeing straight out of the toilet. Both of my younger girls did that for some odd reason. But only at public toilets, at home they were fine. So I always made sure they leaned allllllll the way forward while tinkling. (Kinda of laying down with their head by their knees) That way the potty went straight down instead of straight forward.
I don't know what to say about the pull up thing. We never once used an entire package of the things. My youngest was afraid of public toilets and wouldn't use one until she had been trained for more than 6 months. She once held it for an eight hour car ride...we kept a potty seat in the van on long trips after that.
Good luck!

I found that pullups were too much like a diaper and were a crutch to my son. If he had a pullup on he was more likely to have an acident than if he was wearing undies. There will be accidentrs, but I say go cold turkey and always being a change of clothes! In all liukelyhood, he won't fully pee. He might start to wet his pants and then realize he's wet. That's what I've discovered anyway.
